The DonorHART™ system is a web based application that captures and analyzes donor reaction information from the nation’s blood centers. The technology enables users to track reaction rates, provide baseline metrics for those rates, and analyze the trends and changes in reaction rates over time.
KBSI’s Donor Hemovigilance Analysis and Reporting Tool (DonorHART™), developed in partnership with AABB and the Department of Health and Human Services, captures and analyzes donor reaction information from the nation’s blood centers. The focus of donor hemovigilance includes monitoring, analyzing, and researching the risks involved for donors at the time of blood donation or following the blood donation event.
The DonorHART™ system enables users to track the different reaction rates, provide baseline metrics for those rates, and to analyze the trends and changes in reaction rates over time. The system also provides insights into the factors affecting reaction rates and facilitates the ability to hypothesize, design, and analyze interventions, as well as assess their impacts, with the goal of improving donor and donation safety. Data validation procedures ensure the completeness and consistency of data added to the system.
Features
The DonorHART™ system is a web based application, allowing users from anywhere in the world to access the system via a web browser. Key features of the DonorHART™ System are described below.
- Web based application. The DonorHART™ system currently supports Internet Explorer 7 and 8 (IE) and Mozilla Firefox 3.5.8.
- Support for both manual and file based data entry. Blood collection centers without an internal hemovigilance system can enter data manually using the system’s web-based GUI, using the DonorHART™ system as their enterprise hemovigilance system. Blood collection centers already using internal IT systems to capture donor and reaction data can directly upload this data to the DonorHART™ system. Each participating organization will also be able to download their data.
- Robust representation framework. The DonorHART™ system standardizes data using inference rules based on signs and symptoms, diagnoses, and durations of reactions. This representational framework works to standardize the definition and adoption of reaction types and severity levels making it possible to map these categories to other systems.
- Comprehensive denominator data capture. While most hemovigilance systems capture reaction information and some capture denominator information (i.e., number of donations), the DonorHART™ system captures denominator breakdown according to different demographics (age, weight, blood volume, gender, blood pressure, first time vs. repeat, procedure type, etc.) and donation specific attributes (donation type, device, manufacturer, collection container, etc). This allows the system to not only calculate the different reaction rates (e.g., vasovagal reactions without any complications), but to also analyze how the reaction rates vary across different groups (male vs. female, young vs. old, across different device types, etc.).
- Role Based Access Control (RBAC). The system supports role based access control, administering system privileges according to user roles (including data reporters, analysts, and administrators) at individual organizations and at the system level as well.
- Assembly of donor history profile. The DonorHART™ system automatically assembles the complete history of a donor in terms of the donations and reactions reported in the data. The donor history profile is useful for analyzing the long term effects of multiple donations on the donor (e.g., the long-term effects on platelet and plasma counts).
- Comprehensive report generation. Using the denominator data captured by the system, the DonorHART™ system generates a wide variety of reports, ranging from snapshots and baselines of data to trends and comparisons of different demographic and donation attributes.
