Overview

In Phase I of the Integrated Product Data Environment (IPDE) project, KBSI conducted a concept study for integrating product data and providing easy access to this data across a network for engineers whose tasks were reengineered for the IPDE. In addition, KBSI identified the legacy data sources and established requirements for COTS Computer-Aided Design (CAD), Computer-Aided Manufacture (CAM), Computer-Aided Engineering (CAE), Product Data Management (PDM), Computer-Aided Reverse Engineering (CARE), and Computer-Aided Legacy Data Conversion (CALDC) software for use in the IPDE. Once the requirements were established, KBSI next defined a procedure for integrating legacy databases and legacy data, a procedure for reengineering processes for use with the IPDE, and developed a prototype IPDE.

When this initial work was completed, KBSI next developed an example scenario with which to demonstrate the potential of the IPDE. The scenario used an aircraft grounded by a critical part failure (MICAP), and, with the IPDE, the engineering team: (1) retrieved data (the procurement history, inventory, technical orders, and drawings) indexed from a national stock number; (2) reverse engineered data from existing parts and drawings; (3) performed finite element analysis on the part, (4) generated numerical control codes, and (5) manufactured the part.

The potential benefits of the IPDE system are several and include:

increased ability to field weapon systems beyond their planned lifespan,

monetary savings on competitive reprocurement,

increased utilization of engineering expertise,

reduced cycle time of parts procurement and organic manufacturing resulting in lower part inventories,

reduced item costs by substituting industrial standards, and

reduced cycle times on technical order changes.
