Overview

Tractability and accountability are principal goals of Total Quality Management (TQM) in the development and evolution of information systems. With the demand for new information systems on the rise, there is also increased impetus for reducing cost, improving quality, and shortening development time for new information systems. These pressures have led to the pursuit of methods similar to those being proposed under the label of "concurrent engineering" in other disciplines.

The purpose of the KBIMI project was to develop the proper theoretical foundations for information model integration and, concomitantly, to develop a robust automated model integration support tool. The technology resulting from this project was integrated into the PDES Semantic Unification Meta-model that formed the basis for model integration throughout the PDES Family of Standards.

Three central results emerged from this project:

Definition of the methodological foundations for model integration, including a detailed characterization of ontology-driven integration.

Development of the theoretical foundations for ontology-driven model integration (based on analysis of actual models) including key extensions to the mathematical foundations of the Neutral Information Representation Scheme (NIRS)
Development of a conceptual architecture for an automated integration support tool.
