Overview

The goal of this Phase I SBIR project was to more effectively apply evolving information systems technology to aircraft maintenance management. Prior to this project, much of the cost and time delays associated with aircraft maintenance were the unplanned, unscheduled aircraft maintenance tasks discovered during routine, scheduled maintenance. As the Air Force attempted to extend the life of aging aircraft more and more, this problem will become more critical. Improved technical approaches to planning, managing, and controlling these unplanned, unscheduled maintenance activities will enable better defense readiness, contained costs, and higher quality maintenance.

The first task of this project, and the foundation for subsequent project tasks, was characterizing the critical differences between sustainment of aircraft and manufacturing of aircraft. In other words, to define (and publish) that which characterizes sustainment and to delineate the domain in which sustainment occurs. Once these sustainment principles were defined, KBSI began scripting the information requirements for this domain focusing on the decision support for sustainment activities. From this script, KBSI, in the final phase of the project, developed a decision support system architecture that facilitates the planning and performance of aircraft maintenance activities.
