Overview

The AFSLES project provided the Corpus Christi Army Depot (CCAD) with a design and plan for an improved shot peening machine and shop environment. This project was motivated by an anticipated increase in flight critical part workload within the depot and the CCAD’s Industrial Engineering group was concerned about the capacity levels that the shot peening shop could support. The KBSI objective was to perform capacity analyses and to develop a shop cost estimation tool for CCAD, so KBSI and CCAD could evaluate the current capacity level, evaluate cost implications of in-house and vendor contracted work, and ultimately support the designing of a machine that could handle the increased workload at minimized life-cycle costs.

In meeting the objectives of this project, KBSI studied current and projected workloads for the machine and shop environment and gathered shot-peening specifications. KBSI used AIØ WIN® and SmartCost® in developing the foundation activity and cost models that were used in the overall analyses. The findings of these analyses were utilized in developing a new machine design able to handle the wide variety of parts to be worked, minimize part cycle times, increase process control, improve the quality of performance and the quality of the finished article, and secure the CCAD role in remanufacturing flight critical parts.

In addition, KBSI helped develop a web-based engineering data repository to maintain technical data within a single, multi-media repository. Information for over 50 standard parts was gathered via Depot Maintenance Work Requirements (DMWR), drawings, work routing documents, and other technical data items. This repository provided shop operators with a consolidated means for obtaining the latest technical specifications on part dimensions, shot peening specifications, and machine setup parameters.
