AWSM TAPped by Navy Program for Phase III Commercialization

The U.S. Navy's Transition Assistance Program (TAP) focuses on taking select SBIR and STTR Phase II technologies and transitioning those technologies to commercial products suitable for contractors and other private sector companies. The selection process is highly competative, and TAP selects only the most promising projects for participation in the program.

KBSI's Agile, Wireless-enabled Workflows for Ship Manufacturing and Repair (AWSM) has been selected by TAP for Phase III development. AWSM addresses challenges at the heart of manufacturing planning and scheduling: how to close the gap between the state of the shop floor represented in planning and information systems and the real-world state of the shop floor itself. In other words, how do you plan and schedule for processes already in progress--processes tied to rapidly shifting workload and resource contingencies that threaten to make plans and schedules obsolete before they're even implemented? AWSM offers a wireless solution for agile and responsive shop floor planning and scheduling particularly suited to manufacturing environments.

U.S. Navy Transition Assistance Program (TAP)

If manufacture, maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) planning and scheduling are to be effective and efficient, the supporting information system must have accurate information about the status of the jobs, materials, and resources on the shop floor and work environment. Without such accurate data, even sophisticated information and decision support systems will produce outdated, sub-optimal solutions, proving the cliché "garbage in garbage out." KBSI's AWSM technology uses wireless (occasionally connected) shop floor status collection, work plan distribution, and material kit management technology in providing the infrastructure and roadmap to address these issues.

At the core of AWSM are fundamental principles of business process analysis and design that, supported by and integrated with the latest advancements in wireless applications and pervasive computing, form a comprehensive system for planning and scheduling. The goal of the Phase III is to transition AWSM technology to U.S. manufacturing and MRO industries through the development of customized AWSM applications that enable the re-engineering of planned and on-going MRP, ERP, and related applications.
