Overview

During normal drilling system operation, large amounts of data are recorded and archived. Much of the information embedded in this data, however, is not extracted and effectively used during drilling operations, leading to critical mistakes, hazardous situations, and increased costs.

The SDES Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) project developed advanced enabling technology that addresses the technical and pragmatic challenges associated with the development and deployment of advanced decision support technologies within the oil and geothermal drilling industries.

The goal of this project was to develop and demonstrate a robust expert system that provides sensory data interpretation to facilitate increased drilling operator understanding and drilling system data recognition.

Results

The project has realized two principal results.

SDES Architecture Design and Demonstration: KBSI designed and implemented the architecture of a novel, open, reconfigurable, adaptable, decision support system for drilling system personnel. Key SDES innovations include

an innovative approach to drilling system fault detection and prediction using hybrids of Artificial Neural Nets and Fuzzy Inference Systems,

advanced architecture mechanisms for self-adaptation and automatic reconfiguration, and

a robust, knowledge based approach for rapid capturing expert knowledge and cost effective system deployment

Strategic Partner and Application Focus Selection: We identified several key industry and institutional collaborators. These partners provided KBSI with application focus areas and drilling data from these focus areas.

The SDES project developed important enabling technology for the advanced drilling systems of the coming millennium. This technology has resulted in order of magnitude enhancements to operator understanding of drilling equipment conditions and states, leading to better data interpretation and, subsequently, a reduction in costly equipment damage and production downtime.
