Overview

Drilling operations today are extremely complex, hazardous, expensive, and risky. There is a lack of robust training and decision support technology to help drilling engineers and technicians mitigate, in real time, potential problems encountered during drilling operations. The MIDAS-DS Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) project addressed the gaps and challenges associated with the adoption of real time computer based training tools within the U.S. drilling industry.

KBSI's objectives were to

bullet

investigate and understand drilling operations, cognitive load on drilling personnel, and the training requirements of these personnel

bullet

develop and demonstrate a MIDAS-DS prototype that delivers a virtual training environment addressing the needs of drilling industry personnel

bullet

develop the requirements and architecture for a full-scale implementation of this technology in a real-world environment

Results

The project realized the MIDAS-DS Architecture Design and Demonstration: KBSI designed and implemented the architecture of a novel, open, reconfigurable, adaptable, multimedia, simulation-based training system. Key innovations include:

an approach to real-time, multi-media training knowledge delivery that combines simulation-based training with repository-based training methods

advanced mechanisms for self-adaptation and automatic reconfiguration

a robust, knowledge based approach for the rapid capture of expert knowledge and cost-effective training system deployment

In addition, the MIDAS-DS had realized a Strategic Partner and Application Focus Selection: KBSI identified several key industry and institutional collaborators. These partners provided KBSI with application focus areas and drilling data from these focus areas.

MIDAS-DS technology will provide the necessary infrastructure to deliver high-quality, affordable training material to drilling personnel through the use of simulation, distributed computing technologies, and multimedia. MIDAS-DS will reduce drilling expenditures incurred every year by significantly reducing training costs, improving productivity, and increasing the safety of operators and oil wells.
