Overview

The Medical Materiel Knowledge Discoverer (MMKD) is a knowledge discovery system for the DoD Medical Logistics community that goes beyond simple data mining.

The changing nature of military conflicts in the world favor an emphasis on the rapid deployment of troops in an ever widening variety of scenarios and locales. These developments raise significant logistical challenges and risks for, among other military branches, the DOD medical community.

The main goal of the MMKD project is to design, develop, and validate a Knowledge Discovery Framework (KDF) for the DOD Medical Logistics community. MMKD will be a configurable, dashboard driven system for knowledge discovery that allows for easy drill-down navigation through data, knowledge capture, the identification of out of balance conditions, and the application of decision optimization techniques. The system will allow the DOD medical community to rapidly deploy knowledge discovery and apply the results to supply chain logistics. MMKD will also help in the early detection of critical events. Together these capabilities will help the DOD more effectively provide medical support to troops in a more cost effective manner regardless of the fighting scenario or theater.

The result of MMKD will be a solution for uncovering mission critical knowledge by users who are not data mining experts.

Our vision is that the development of MMKD's configurable technology will do for medical supply chain logistics' data mining and knowledge based decision systems what the first visual programming environment has done for application programmers, and what the spreadsheet did for managers. Specifically, the most significant benefit of MMKD is that it will provide sophisticated technology to a wide audience of potential users so that the the power of these technologies will be rapidly exploited and realized for practical applications in both military and commercial user communities. MMKD will enable emerging data mining technical innovations to rapidly "cross the chasm" from prototype level to the mainstream user community with potentially huge payoffs. Other key benefits include (i) significant reductions in the time and cost for building high quality decision support systems, (ii) the ability to explore a larger number of decision alternatives in constant time, and (iii) the ability to adapt decision making capabilities in response to an unpredictable and rapidly changing environments (decision agility and robustness).

While the immediate beneficiaries are DOD medical supply chain managers, the system can also be tailored for application in virtually any data rich environment, particularly when dealing with supply chain logistics. The MMKD toolkit has a wide range of important defense and commercial applications including military critical parts supply management, military threat assessment, target/decoy recognition and discrimination, military COA planning, work planning and scheduling, cash supply management, financial fraud detection, and business intelligence.
