Overview

KBSI’s Battalion Decision Support System (BDSS) project is addressing these challenges by, first, capturing key field level maintenance and part requisition knowledge for the UH-60 Black Hawk aircraft and investigating ways in which advanced Army Transformation in Logistics and sustainment (ATL) technology from the Army Research Laboratories can be applied for battalion decision support in maintenance, logistics, and deployment planning activities.

ATL is an Army Research Laboratory (ARL) unified modeling and experimentation framework with data mining and simulation technologies for assessing current and future material, manpower, and organizational requirements based upon planned operations/missions and accurate asset configuration and status information. The ARL ATL technology is being employed by the CH-47 PMO initiative as the basis for projecting Go-To-War capabilities. The goal of ATL is to provide tools for decision makers to improve operational availability, reduce soldier workload, and lower total ownership costs despite the demands of reduced budgets and increased deployments.

In particular, BDSS is applying ATL concepts and technologies to optimize the use of information in the Army’s Health Utilization Management System (HUMS) and Maintenance Management Information System (MMIS). Using ATL simulation-based decision support technologies, BDSS is exploring ways in which the units can use data from these systems, which dynamically track aircraft configuration, performance, and status, to anticipate future maintenance requirements and improve and refine deployment planning. The results of BDSS will be used to prototype the infrastructure needed to optimize the use of HUMS/MMIS data in providing more advanced and more responsive battalion decision support.
