Overview

The AIM XXI Program is a partnership program between Anniston Army Depot (ANAD) and General Dynamics Land Systems for rebuilding M1A1 vehicles. Anniston Army Depot is responsible for disassembly of the vehicle and repair of the hull, turret structures, and selected components.

Efficiency improvements were accomplished by applying generally accepted industrial engineering or managerial analysis techniques, practices, and procedures. KBSI also performed engineered 'stopwatch' (analog or electronic) time studies to determine the process time required to overhaul M1A1 components and assemblies.

ANAD's work on the M1A1 is completed in different cost centers within ANAD. As a consequence, in order to keep track of the many processes and resources involved, KBSI performed a comprehensive engineering analysis of ANAD to determine the actual time required by each cost center to overhaul their assigned work units. KBSI also performed a Lean Manufacturing assessment of ANAD that involves building an AS IS baseline model of ANAD processes and, with the help of this model, ascertaining opportunities for throughput and efficiency improvement.

'New' time standards, introduced within an existing work process have the effect, almost without exception, of improving process productivity --individually, and collectively. Past experience (within a variety of overhaul / rebuild settings) has shown process cycle time reduction(s) to be achievable in the 10 - 30%+ range.
