Secure Data Transmissions

In an Air Force Research Laboratory funded project, KBSI is developing the Secure NeTcentric INformation Assurance cLassifyer (SENTINEL™), a distributed semantic and data-driven security classifier that has the ability to semantically classify, manage and filter Cross-Domain Solution (CDS) content. The proposed design would integrate ontology-assisted semantic reasoning, natural language processing, and rule based expert systems to facilitate a robust, cost-effective CDS security clearance guard, which is able to securely manage the data from different classifications while preventing "bleed off" of data into improper security levels and users. The guard will allow for lower clearance users to access information that is filtered to match their security clearance. Similarly, the guard will allow data from all security levels to be managed such that higher levels can access lower security data without the data intermixing or lower levels having access to the higher level systems.

The SENTINEL™ technology will provide a distributed semantic data-driven security classifier. Coalitions are imperative for modern warfare and for subsequent peacetime operations. However, the need for protecting secrets (for example, intelligence sources) is a serious impediment to collaboration and communication. The benefit of the SENTINEL™ technology in this situation is the speed and accuracy of automated document/message classification/sanitization that are achieved by removing the bottleneck that results from the use of manual resources for these functions. This improved speed and accuracy is crucial for working with coalition partners. The SENTINEL™ technology will also benefit intellectual property protection in commercial companies by allowing users to monitor sensitive documents and e-mails leaving the company.
