Since its founding in 1988, Knowledge Based Systems, Inc. (KBSI) has established a reputation for excellence in turning research results into innovative commercial technologies. KBSI has been awarded a number of major research and development contracts. An early success that helped develop some of the company’s infrastructure methods and tools was the Information Integration for Concurrent Engineering (IICE) project, conducted for the U.S. Air Force. KBSI’s research solutions were then systematically and aggressively transitioned to state-of-the-art software products—products that have benefited users worldwide.

A broad spectrum of technology and application areas have benefited from KBSI’s work, including artificial intelligence and expert systems, geometric reasoning, computer-aided design and manufacturing, manufacturing systems design and analysis, enterprise integration, process modeling, computer-aided software development, systems simulation, business process design and development, and total quality management.

KBSI's professionals strive to:

Lead the industry in technology development through advanced scientific research.

Convert research results into next generation products that benefit our clients.

Use our experience and expertise in systems/software development, design, and process improvement strategies to generate cost-effective results for our clients.

Research Excellence

Because of our established reputation for excellence and consistency in cutting edge technological advances, KBSI has been awarded a number of major research and development contracts. Our initial mission was to advance the state of the art by developing creative solutions for a wide range of critical problems faced by government, academic, and industrial communities.

KBSI’s experts have successfully fulfilled contracts with government and commercial organizations including the SEMATECH Consortium, the United States Air Force, the United States Navy, Lanner Group (formerly AT&T ISTEL), the Defense Advanced Research Project Agency (DARPA), Digital Equipment Corporation, the National Science Foundation (NSF), and Chrysler Corporation.

Success Stories

Planning and Scheduling Systems. For numerous U.S. Air Force Air Logistics Centers, we delivered an $8 million/year reduction by providing tools, consulting, and software development services to plan and schedule Programmed Depot Maintenance and remanufacture and reverse engineer technical data integration into data warehouses.

BPR Research and Method Development. Many leading Fortune 500 companies and government organizations use the KBSI-developed, IDEF3 Process Description Capture Method as their primary tool for Business Process Reengineering (BPR).

Manufacturing Systems Analysis and Design. For a consortium of major U.S. semiconductor manufacturers, we provided tools to model, design, and optimize manufacturing processes using structured analysis and process simulation. We also developed advanced system to capture expert knowledge for design-to-cost analyses.

Process Reengineering and Systems Development. For an industrial valve and instrumentation remanufacturer, we established an information system that seamlessly integrates the different stages of the valve repair process, ultimately resulting in instantaneous response time to customer requests and a 50% reduction in administrative cycle time.

Data Management Solutions. For the U.S. Air Force, a commercial off-the-shelf (COTS)-based solution was provided for effectively accessing, manipulating, and managing distributed engineering and management data.

Customized Software Development. For an international telecommunications /information systems company, we designed and developed a cost modeling tool to support cost estimation for data warehousing projects.

Expert Systems Development. A major American automotive company uses several KBSI-developed expert systems for automotive cooling system design and air conditioning system design.

For more than a decade, the people at Knowledge Based Systems, Inc. (KBSI) have helped clients successfully improve their enterprises by providing the right combination of tools, methodologies, and support at each phase of their project.
